Apple could blow a hundred million in legal expenses. It's less of an instance of throwing in the towel, and more of an instance of, "You know, the way idiot judges/juries hand out settlements these days, let's just give them a paltry sum, let them think they've won, and still destroy them in the MP3 market."

Not in 20 years, they couldn't. And no matter how often it's said to the contrary, $100 million is still very serious money.

Reminds me of 1997, when Microsoft was forced to invest $150 million in Apple as part of a settlement of a patent lawsuit, a lot of people couldn't wrap their minds around the idea that Microsoft had actually lost. They did then. Apple did today.

yea, with tons of problems to the machines.

i love apple, but everytime i buy one of there laptops, they suck!

Then what is the problem here? You want Apple to announce new products "on time" and tell in advance when they are doing it. But you obviously are not interested in their laptops since "they suck". So why are you so concerned about this again?

seems fairly solid. MR has always been very reserved in claims about the iphone, and this is a fairly bold article. i'd love to see it....i just think i'll be cursing my verizon contract and their damn cdma phones once it comes out.

I looked through some of his older posts, and while none of them are quite as obvious about how shallow and uncaring he is you can tell that he probably doesn't include the whole story. For example, he likes to argue with his neighbors (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=978345&highlight=) I'm guessing that we only got half the story in that thread. Sounds like he was pretty rude in an Apple store. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=644656&highlight=) and one quote from that thread:
plus parking in a handicapped spot. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=928429&highlight=) So based on past examples of his attitude here, I think this is really the way he thinks, not just an attempt to troll.
You may certainly be right about this. On the other hand, I have encountered several trolls whose shtick (signature behavior) is identical to shallow and uncaring attitude. And the sense of entitlement is just typical for the trolls that were "born" in 2008 when the recession started.

Am I missing something from this? You're using a screenshot of Windows showing file types and the only thing showing the use of the term "Application" is on iTunes related files?

How does that prove your point? I really don't know if I missed what you were actually trying to convey? It's kinda like when someone is horribly wrong and because of that you start to question yourself if you were even right in the first place.

Thought it was clear so I'll try again.

Notice the iTunes.exe in the middle? It being the actual program but is denoted as Application.;)

I've seen some posts about transferring "that much data" in disbelief. I calculate that a two hour movie will no more about 450MB. I hope it is, of course. This is based on a 1-hr episode of Lost is about 200MB. I fudge in 50MB for the fact that each Lost episode never is EXACTLY 1 hour.

I can transfer that size (450MB) from my ReplayTV wirelessly to my PowerBook in less than a half hour with my Airport Extreme Basestation.

So... I see no problem. Perhaps the show will be delayed a little but not more than a few minutes

Lost runs about 42 minutes, so more like 600 meg. And you're assuming they'll ship movies at 320x240, which I doubt. If they up the quality to anything approaching DVD, file sizes will go way up. But I still think a well implemented wireless solution should be able to keep up, people are doing it already.

Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain!

    ...sorry, couldn't resist.:)

    you're quite welcome...

It'll be the fact that that is funny that keeps me in good spirits for the future.

Hopefully, (and it's what I'm clinging to) it's 'these islands' (Churchill) that'll finally make them ask what they did it all for. I believe we are immune as a group of people (assimilated though we be) because we'll always laugh in the face of adversity. History tells us that even if 'they' invade us they soon escape (or join up) because 'we' (who aren't aspiring fascists or fascist fodder) are content to treat political occupation as if it were one big joke.

    long may the Joke continue.

There is no "Napa chipset". Like I said, Napa is a hardware-platfom, composed to CPU (Yonah), chipset (Intel Express 945) and WLAN ()Intel PRO/Wireless). The amount of RAM might be limited due to timing-issues and the like.

So Apple's method could be more efficient their side, offering a spotify type model where everyone accesses the same iTunes purchased track (except this time they own it) instead of Amazon's where each indivdual track is stored in their "digital locker"?

A nice bt of foresight by Apple if so.

What seriously kills me about all this is that those sensationalist chimpanzees from GP rally against a computer company that presently has roughly 6% (or less) of the computer market....almost every throw away computer I've ever seen were Compaqs, HP's, Dells, Gateways/e-Machines, and a few other generic crap boxes from some nameless plastic factory stuffing windoze in a toaster. Seriously, Greenpeace goofballs should stop stargazing up their rectums and take a look at the largest contributors of hardware refuse. Macs as far as I know are not easily tossed out. apple computers have been primarily hand me downs unless some terrible accident happened rendering it useless. seriously, no one throws away a functioning mac, unless they decided lead paint makes for good breakfast cereal.

How many of these sap-chugging numbskulls go after Dell for making computers that generally end up being sidewalk fodder? perhaps they should invest their energies into designing the green computer, since they seem to have so much gloriously skilled scientists at their disposal to expose the evil apple. Go team planet!

With the bumped up date for Merom, it is all possible. Since core duo is going to see a price drop the mac mini may get speed bumped, the MB may see a price drop or speed bump, merom MBPs *may* be released, iMac may get updated, and the MPs will come uot.

Apple has never cared about the user, this is not news. Apple only care about one thing: money

What does this even mean? "Apple has never cared about the user?" Perhaps you can teach us, then, how Apple has enjoyed so much success despite "never caring for the user."

Or was it simply fun to write those sentences?

Funny, I just read in USA Today I beleve it was, that law enforcement officers actually prefer people use the apps...saying that even if the app alerts the driver and they change their driving habits for a short time, say, slowing them down from speeding for a few miles...it's a good thing, and they encourage it.
Besides...who the h*ll is the government to tell Apple what they can and cannot do with their business? Regulations are one thing...such as safety regs and such...those are needed, but Christ...this is over the line.

Isn't this iMac design from fall of 2009? That's less than two years.

I seen it as more of a mid model refresh.
TECHNICALLY been the same since 2008.

I did read it. It doesn't answer why there are no viruses today, now that Mac OS has greater market share than ever, when there were viruses back when it had a much smaller market share. The market share theory is pure nonsense. It doesn't stand up to simple math.

The theory that OS X is completely secure is equally nonsense.
You definitely don't need an anti-malware solution installed right now, but it is only a matter of time.

There is a reason malware isn't prevalent and it's certainly not because there are no flaws to be leveraged into exploits.

Just look at the security fixes of 10.6.7 update released a few days ago: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4581

Here's a list of some of the more serious 54 security fixes released

    AppleScript
A format string issue existed in AppleScript Studio's generic dialog commands ("display dialog" and "display alert"). Running an AppleScript Studio-based application that allows untrusted input to be passed to a dialog may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

    ATS
A heap buffer overflow issue existed in the handling of OpenType, TrueType and Type 1 fonts. Viewing or downloading a document containing a maliciously crafted embedded font may lead to arbitrary code execution.

Multiple buffer overflow issues existed in the handling of SFNT tables. Viewing or downloading a document containing a maliciously crafted embedded font may lead to arbitrary code execution.

    bzip2
An integer overflow issue existed in bzip2's handling of bzip2 compressed files. Using the command line bzip2 or bunzip2 tool to decompress a bzip2 file may result in an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

    ClamAV
Multiple vulnerabilities exist in ClamAV, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issues by updating ClamAV to version 0.96.5. ClamAV is distributed only with Mac OS X Server systems.

    CoreText
A memory corruption issue existed in CoreText's handling of font files. Viewing or downloading a document containing a maliciously crafted embedded font may lead to arbitrary code execution.

    File Quarantine
The OSX.OpinionSpy definition has been added to the malware check within File Quarantine.

    ImageIO
A heap buffer overflow issue existed in ImageIO's handling of JPEG and XBM images. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

A buffer overflow existed in libTIFF's handling of JPEG encoded TIFF images and CCITT Group 4 encoded TIFF images. Viewing a maliciously crafted TIFF image may result in an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

An integer overflow issue existed in ImageIO's handling of JPEG-encoded TIFF images. Viewing a maliciously crafted TIFF image may result in an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.6.

    Image RAW
Multiple buffer overflow issues existed in Image RAW's handling of Canon RAW images. Viewing a maliciously crafted Canon RAW image may result in an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

    Installer
A URL processing issue in Install Helper may lead to the installation of an agent that contacts an arbitrary server when the user logs in. The dialog resulting from a connection failure may lead the user to believe that the connection was attempted with Apple. This issue is addressed by removing Install Helper.

    Kerberos
Multiple cryptographic issues existed in MIT Kerberos 5. Only CVE-2010-1323 affects Mac OS X v10.5.

    Kernel
A privilege checking issue existed in the i386_set_ldt system call's handling of call gates. A local user may be able to execute arbitrary code with system privileges. This issue is addressed by disallowing creation of call gate entries via i386_set_ldt().

    libxml
A memory corruption issue existed in libxml's XPath handling. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

A double free issue existed in libxml's handling of XPath expressions. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.6.

    Mailman
Multiple cross-site scripting issues existed in Mailman 2.1.13. These issues are addressed by updating Mailman to version 2.1.14.

    PHP
PHP is updated to version 5.3.4 to address multiple vulnerabilities, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution.

    QuickLook
A memory corruption issue existed in QuickLook's handling of Excel files. Downloading a maliciously crafted Excel file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.6.

A memory corruption issue existed in QuickLook's handling of Microsoft Office files. Downloading a maliciously crafted Microsoft Office file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

    QuickTime
Multiple memory corruption issues existed in QuickTime's handling of JPEG2000 images. Viewing a maliciously crafted JPEG2000 image with QuickTime may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

An integer overflow existed in QuickTime's handling of movie files. Viewing a maliciously crafted movie file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. For Mac OS X v10.5 this issue was addressed in QuickTime 7.6.9.

A memory corruption issue existed in QuickTime's handling of FlashPix images. Viewing a maliciously crafted FlashPix image may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. For Mac OS X v10.5 this issue was addressed in QuickTime 7.6.9.

A cross-origin issue existed in QuickTime plug-in's handling of cross-site redirects. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to the disclosure of video data from another site. This issue is addressed by preventing QuickTime from following cross-site redirects.

A memory corruption issue existed in QuickTime's handling of panorama atoms in QTVR (QuickTime Virtual Reality) movie files. Viewing a maliciously crafted QTVR movie file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. For Mac OS X v10.5 this issue was addressed in QuickTime 7.6.9.

    Ruby
An integer truncation issue existed in Ruby's BigDecimal class. Running a Ruby script that uses untrusted input to create a BigDecimal object may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This issue only affects 64-bit Ruby processes.

    Samba
A stack buffer overflow existed in Samba's handling of Windows Security IDs. If SMB file sharing is enabled, a remote attacker may cause a denial of service or arbitrary code execution.

    Subversion
Subversion servers that use the non-default "SVNPathAuthz short_circuit" mod_dav_svn configuration setting may allow unauthorized users to access portions of the repository. This issue is addressed by updating Subversion to version 1.6.13. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.6.

    X11
Multiple vulnerabilities existed in FreeType, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution when processing a maliciously crafted font. These issues are addressed by updating FreeType to version 2.4.3

Don't get me wrong, I would welcome a new enclosure but I think that allowing the prospect of one to be the determining factor in the purchase of a machine is ridiculous. As much as I would LOVE to have a gunmetal colored mbp, if it came out tomorrow I wouldn't be upset that I have a silver one because I truly do love my machine. Apple will always continue to innovate and release new products, and IMO now that they're using intel chips the rate of obsolescence will increase (in terms of harware and performance more than appearance).

    Oh yes that makes sense.

I truly and honestly think the only reason I dont praise the Powerbook look is because now look how many computers are getting that aluminum finish and trying to look like Apple... Though they fail, it doesn't mean it still makes me want a change (if that makes sense?).

So because they are poor, and haven't "developed", we should sit back and allow them to die, in order to thin out the human population? What makes the human race different from all the other animals is the ability for us to change our fate with tools. I would gather that if you were to take our technology away, say with an EMP, you would find that the people of Africa would have the skills to survive, while us Americans would suffer with our under developed hunting and gathering skills. Your view is way too narrow, and very American.

Please read the entire post, think about it, and then respond.

I never said we should allow anyone to die - I said the exact opposite... that it is our job to be compassionate and to try and help in any way we can. My point was that there are certain aspects of the culture in African society which have bene ingrained in their way of live far longer than any western culture has even been in existence. So to think we can change that with any amount of money or education is naive.

We can and should try to save lives, and that is always a good thing. The African people are human beings, no better or worse than Americans or Brits or any other culture, color, or country. But at the end of the day, it comes down to the age-old question of whether it's our job, responsibility, or even our right to impose our culture and belief system on another. I'm merely saying that these people have chosen to develop their culture in a certain way, and perhaps they need something other than our system of education to change that. They need time... and unfortunately with that time will come deaths. I would never say or imply that innocent people should die; I merely am saying that perhaps our efforts are misguided, and that these people have something going on that's far deeper than can be fixed with education or funding. Maybe they need a long period of time where they evolve at their own pace into what their culture deems an appropriate solution.
