For all the bleeding heart liberals I've spoken with over the years, who want crazy amounts taxed in order to support social uplift programs, I never see any of them giving away 50+% of their income to charity. It's a lot easier to ask the government to give other peoples money to charity.

I can tell you right now that my family gives >50% of its total income.

However, if you think that taxes = charity, what incentive do you have to give? (to the organizations that are 90+% efficient rather than whatever the crap the government is)

You know, this is so true. I spend a ton of my time volunteering and doing things that are relatively generous for others in spite of being incredibly financially conservative (for example, the guys I live with hosted a dinner for a fair number of younger college students tonight, a few days ago we had a homeless guy spend the night, yesterday I volunteered all night at a local community center, etc).

Maybe this is why I take such issue with the idea of governmentally run "welfare" type programs because I do this sort of thing on a regular basis.

    1. If you are on Salary, you contractually agreed to get the job done regardless of the typical "work week". If you don't want to work long hours, don't accept a salaried position.

    2. I am just as whole-heartedly against forcing hourly employees to work unpaid overtime. That would be "theft" or "servitude". Totally different.
I never understood exactly what it means to be a salary worker. Even when I am told I am a salary worker I still have to log my hours (as if I were paid hourly) and I still can't do overtime (==comp time). So what am I missing?

    The above text contains:
Strawman argument/claiming what I said wasn't true without providing any proof/Insults

    Here's another recap for you:
Person 1: Thunderbolt = Mac Only
    You: Bingo
Me: Post to an article showing that it won't be Mac only
You: Claim you were talking metaphorically to save your ass
Myself and Econgeek: Explain to you why what you saved your ass with won't be true
You: Go on a rampage of insults

    Pot, meet kettle.
I'll respond to you one last time, to try to clarify your confusion.

Strawman argument/claiming what I said wasn't true without providing any proof/Insults No. You are confusing these with facts. I've pointed out to you each time you have made something up in my reply.

Person 1: Thunderbolt = Mac Only True. In the same way FW is 'Mac only'. You perhaps don't understand the difference between speaking literally and effectively. Effectively, FW is considered 'Mac only' yet is available to any vendor that wants to implement it. But the lack of interest has resulted in it being considered 'Mac only'. Not literally, but effectively. See the difference?
    You: Bingo True.
Me: Post to an article showing that it won't be Mac only False. You posted an article that said others could use it. Nowhere in your article did it say others would use it. I explained this to you, but again, you missed the point. Firewire isn't literally Mac only either.
You: Claim you were talking metaphorically to save your ass False. I don't think you understand what a metaphor is, because you aren't using it right. I claimed, and the OP later explained, it was meant, in context, effectively Mac only. Seriously, this is highschool english.
Myself and Econgeek: Explain to you why what you saved your ass with won't be trueFalse. Econogeek did well in explaining how the situations differ. You explained nothing.
You: Go on a rampage of insults False. No insults. Just observations. If you made a lot of spelling errors and I pointed them out, that would be an observation, not an insult. You both misunderstood posts and made up claims of statements that did not exist. I pointed that out. If you felt insulted, you are being overly sensitive.

Anyone who is stupid enough to confuse a Galaxy S with an iPhone shouldn't own a smartphone anyway. All they have to do is turn over the freaking phone and notice that big Samsung logo to know it's not an Apple product.

Or they could open up the iPhone and see the same Samsung logo tattoo'd all over the parts.

You got customer service from Verizon? Is this before or after they tacked on the taxes that aren't being collected anymore? Or crippled the Bluetooth on their phones? Or put a terrible GUI on their phones? Or any other number of things that they've done that are anti-consumer?

I admit they do indeed do these things... or have done these things in the past. But the situation that I spoke of was last week, also every time I have called them they have worked with everything and entered things just right so that if I wanted to change my plan it would not be prorated at all.

    .

Yeah at $99 a year. And don't think Apple will give you 25GB free when and if any features become free in the future. You will be lucky if you get 5 GB.

Apple may offer a choice of Core Duo 1 or Core Duo 2 as a BTO option.

Doing this might allow Apple to sell the Basic MacBooks and iMacs for less while
the Core Duo 2 models will be favored by those who can afford to spend a bit more.
Except that the Core Duo is no less expensive than the Core2 Duo, and because of inferior power management, is less suitable for laptops. And BTO CPU options for notebooks are unlikely, considering how they would make the product line more complicated, and they would require a change to a socketed CPU.

I'm working with Arn on that one... Woodcrest is pretty much slated towards the PowerMacs. We may have to update the story...

    sorry about that. story updated.

    arn

yay, I feel special now. ;) Thanks guys. :)

I really think the iMac should use Conroe now. I think the reason they used the Yonah chip is that they had no desktop "Core" architecture chips available. While using Merom is the easy thing to do, I hope they don't do it. The iMac is supposedly a desktop, it should use a desktop chip.

My thoughts exactly. Now that intel has a real desktop processor, why shouldn't apple's desktop computer use it?

Did anyone pay attention to the power and thermal requirements of Conroe?

The 2.40 and 2.66 (which would be great for the imacs) use 114 Watts at idle and 158-162 at load (http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2795&p=7). Here's info on power draw for original G5s (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=32486), early 2005 G5s (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302439), and late 2005 G5s (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303540). I fail to see the problem. I'm not being flip - I really fail to see the problem. They fit G5s in to imacs, and those power draw numbers look worse than conroe's, unless I'm missing something.

You should have a unique identifier (password) attached to authentication mechanism (UAC in Windows). So, Windows users should run as standard users. But, using a standard account in Windows causes issues with some software, such as some online games, that require admin accounts (or "run as administrator"; superuser) to function.

Maybe theoretically you should do that, but I don't know anyone that actually does on Windows or OS X. In both cases you aren't actually running with your full powers all the time, and get prompted to escalate if something needs admin access.

Many online games on Windows 7 still require running as Administrator (superuser privileges) to function. This requires setting the "Properties" to allow "run as Administrator" or turning off UAC. This is risky as the games connect to remote servers and download content. Trojans are installed without authentication if accessed with superuser privileges. This example, using online games, shows the problem with how software is being written for Windows.

Commercial software shouldn't be installing malware...I mean tons of it now has all kinds of DRM that is arguably malware, but...

While I'd rather run something without giving it full access to the system, ultimately you're trusting the publisher either way.

The issue with online games found in Windows is not problematic on Mac OS X given that software for Mac is written following the guidelines of the principle of least privilege (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Principle_of_least_privilege) more so than Windows software.

Be that as it may, that's not a problem with the OS. If games are prompting for admin access though, my guess is it's because they're installing DRM, which on either OS is going to demand mucking about in the system.

I'm opposed to most forms of DRM for a variety of reasons (and also opposed to thieves), but this has nothing to do with Windows.

Mac OS X is much better insulated from Malware.

    Why?

Vulnerabilities in those components in Mac OS X are attributed as OS X vulnerabilities because OS X includes them by default so this artificially inflates the number of vulnerabilities in OS X when looking at vulnerability comparisons.

I really doubt they double count things like that, given they're counted separately. I suppose there might be some validity to it if they did.

These components have worse security in Windows. How these vulnerabilities manifest in Windows is through Internet Explorer.

**Edit, IMO i think its silly because whos gonna pay $14.99 for a movie on a tiny screen, and if they make it to watch on your computer then its just going to take hours and hours to download if you have a slow broadband connection

$14.99 for new movies, but $9.99 for older films supposedly.

Some movies aren't much longer than hour long TV shows, and people have been downloading those regularly from iTunes. And like I said, there are a lot of people out there already downloading movies from the internet. My guess is there are also a lot of people who would love to have an easy option to get their movies online, but aren't tech savvy enough to know what bit-torrent is, or where to find illegal torrent sites, etc. Those types of people would probably jump all over an easy to access and use movie downlaod site. iTunes already has a great reputation, so consumer comfort is high with Apple in that regard.

Honestly though, it remains be seen until people are able to use the new service, but I have a feeling it will do quite well, even if it is geared for a small screen (with the option to watch fullscreen in iTunes on your computer.) Who knows though? The PSP UMD movie format is dead. But I think that's due to Sony's poor marketing and DVD comparable cost of UMD movies than anything else.

And yes, go ahead and sell your PSP. You'll feel better. I did, and I do. :)

Yeah it should be, there's no hard drive to make noise and unless you keep it on a stove or do insanely heavy processing you shouldn't hear the fan either.

Sandy Bridge should also run more efficiently than the C2D. That will not only extend baterry life, but it will also keep the normal operation temperatures down.

(Oops! I replied twice. Is there a way to delete my own post?)

Dell currently quotes 9-22. Or did yesterday when I placed an order.

Just checked again. It does appear that laptops are ready to go on 9-22, 9-25, and 9-27, depending on which model and size. Still, that gives Apple some "breathing room" to release theirs.

It looks descriptive to you because there is an App Store for your Mac and there is an App Store for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. If Apple hadn't invented the term "App Store" and used it for its super successful site, you would never have heard the term, and you wouldn't know what it means.

Yes, you know what an "app store" means if you know what an "app" means.

Does an "app" mean an Apple program?

As others have pointed out (repeatedly), Windows does actually refer to what you call 'Programs' as applications. For example, right click on a 'program' shortcut. On the short-cut, what does it say for the "target type?"

Since you seem to have trouble reading so-far, I'll give you a hint: it says "Application."

It's been this way since <at least> Windows XP.

It's doesn't matter what MS calls it. There's a class of programs everywhere called "applications". There's no other name for it.

Applications are a strict subset of programs.
