Track Palin, the eldest son of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and her husband Todd, has wed his high school sweetheart.
The Army Reservist, 22, tied the knot with Britta Hanson, 21, in a small ceremony in Hatcher Pass, Alaska earlier this month, PEOPLE said Thursday.
?Our families couldn?t be happier!? the Hansons and Palins said in a joint statement to the magazine. ?These are two hard working, humble, active, studious young adults who grew up together. We?re tickled that after two decades of friendship we proudly witnessed their marriage, knowing their new life together will be blessed.?
The newlyweds began dating while classmates at a Wasila, Alaska high school and continued their relationship while Track was stationed overseas as an active member of the US Army in 2008. Though the recent ceremony was an intimate family affair, the new Mr. and Mrs. Palin are planning a larger celebration at Alaska?s Alyeska Ski Resort this winter, this time the nups will include ?extended family and friends from the Lower 48 [who] can travel north for a long ski weekend.?
Britta is a nursing student at the University of Alaska. Track, who spent a year deployed in Iraq, plans to study at the University of Alaska at the conclusion of the commercial fishing season.
The marriage is the first for any of Sarah and Todd Palin?s five kids. Daughter Bristol was previously engaged to Levi Johnston, with whom she has a tw-year-old son, Tripp. The two called off the engagement just a few weeks after rekindling their romance in 2010.
