A charity album featuring hits from Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Madonna has raised $5 million for the victims of the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan in March.
Songs for Japan, a collaborative effort between the world?s biggest record companies, was released as a two-disc CD set and digital download last month, with all proceeds benefitting the Japanese Red Cross Society. The compilation consisted of 38 hits and classic songs, including ?Imagine? by John Lennon, ?Don?t Let The Sun Go Down On Me? by Elton John, Beyonce?s ?Irreplaceable,? Katy Perry?s ?Firework,? Justin Timberlake?s ?Like I Love You,? Eminem?s ?Love the Way You Lie,? Save Me? by Nicki Minaj, Kings of Leon?s ?Use Somebody,? Justin Bieber?s ?Pray,? and ?Make You Feel My Love,? performed by Adele. Featured artists, songwriters, labels, publishers, and iTunes waived their royalty fees and proceeds for the singles included on the album.
Other artists on the collection include Shakira, Ne-Yo, Elton John, Queen, Foo Fighters, Sade, R.E.M., Bon Jovi, Lady Antebellum, Pink, Black Eyed Peas, Josh Groban, Bruce Springsteen, U2, and Bruno Mars.
More than 500,000 copies of Songs have been sold to date.
