Don Lemon Gay

In case your Gaydar didn?t get the memo, CNN anchor Don Lemon is gayer than Pottery Barn on a Sunday morning.

Shocking, we know.

The journalist comes out on the pages of his memoir, Transparent, hitting booksellers? shelves June 16.

Every since he was ?knee-high to a duck? (Only a card-carrying gay could get away with using that expression with a straight face?), the studious Brooklyn College graduate knew he wasn?t a lover of labia. Lemon says fear of rejection prompted him to put his sexuality on a shelf, keeping the secret tucked away from friends and loved ones for years.

?I, like most gay people, lived a life of fear. Fear that if some employers, co-workers, friends, neighbors and family members learned of my sexuality, I would be shunned, mocked and ostracized. It is a burden that millions of people carry with them every single day,? Don writes. ?I?m scared. I?m talking about something that people might shun me for, ostracize me for. It?s quite different for an African-American male. It?s about the worst thing you can be in black culture. You?re taught you have to be a man; you have to be masculine. In the black community they think you can pray the gay away. I abhor hypocrisy. I think if you?re going to be in the business of news, and telling people the truth, of trying to shed light in dark places, then you?ve got to be honest. You?ve got to have the same rules for yourself as you do for everyone else.?

Transparent is dedicated to the life and memory of Tyler Clementi. Last September, the Rutgers University freshman ? an accomplished musician ? leapt off Manhattan?s George Washington Bridge, plunging to his death in the icy water below, after his romp with another man became the subject of a web show that quickly spread across campus. As his Twitter followers rallied around Don on Monday, praising the newsman for his courage, the TV personality maintained hope that his own coming out story will make the march toward equality just a bit easier for the Tylers of the world.

?I?m overwhelmed by all your tweets and support! Hoping this prevents more tragedies like tyler clementi?s suicide?.?
