I don't think Core 2 Duo is realy all that much of a big deal for Apple in the grand scheme of things. It's a small speed bump, with 64 bit as a bonus extra.I think 31% Longer Battery Life, 20% more power at same speed, 4MB L2 cache, significantly cooler (http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=288&type=expert&pid=1) is a very big deal.I don't believe any of this. The intel MacBook Pros just came out, and the main advantage of the 2 Duo is it's socet compatible with it's predecessor. Why screw aroud with a proven design, when there's absolutely no need. You do that sort of thing when the chipset and whatnot changes and you have to redesign the internals anyway.MBP announced January 10 shipped February. Needs redesign to add the easy access HD Bay they put in MacBook in May. Whenever Apple adds a Pro feature to a consumer system it means the next pro system will have it too.Finaly, Merom whatnot are being very much overhyped. The main tech advancements for most users came with Core Duo. iMac and mac Mini prices dropped in the UK in the summer so when Core 2 Duo gets announced you can bet they'll be back up at the release price of the respective hardware platform (iMac, Mini, PBP, etc). Thus you will get more power, but you'll pay for it so bang for buck wise I realy don't think it will make a massive difference.PC Perspectives Editor's Choice Award: (http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=288&type=expert&pid=1) "We can now say without a doubt that Intel's latest mobile CPU has nailed the holy grail in mobile computing - it performs faster, consumes less power, and generates less heat. What else is there to say besides that?...
Not only that, it has technology improvements under the hood like a larger level 2 cache (4MB) and 64-bit extensions to support 64-bit OSes like the upcoming Windows Vista. If you've had reservations before about getting a laptop, the Core 2 Duo should have you convinced. Intel's track record in this arena is strong, and their latest CPU just solidifies their lead."
Read these charts and tell us how it won't make a big difference again:

The trackpad option is awesome. Every bundled Apple mouse I've gotten for the past 15 years has gone straight in the trash. The only good mouse Apple ever made was the ADB II. At least now I get a free trackpad to play with! Cool!
I'd love to have a trackpad but I do really like the Magic Mouse. It's not super ergonomic, of course, but I like it more than most other traditional mice.

sounds like a nice starter level phone/ipod.
but what I and many other people want is a smart phone, for:
Treo/Blackberry like functionality
Camera with decent megapixel, maybe 3 megapixels (settle for 1.3) that moves.
so you can have "isight" built in. also ichatav with video.
Ipod, with 80 gb hard drive.
Video capability, both from itunes, and even with streamed cellular broadband via slingbox or from more
oh well... to dream

Insiders can only presume the device will take up the form of a video-enabled version of Apple's existing AirPort Express wireless base station, which lets users stream their iTunes music tracks from their computers to their home stereo receivers. It also acts as a wireless 802.11 router and printing hub.
This would quite possibly be the best thing ever if it worked well (it would have to at least output 720p, if that's even *possible* over 802.11g/whatever). I've been waiting for a device like that for a rather long time.

Reports that Apple will be hosting a special media event on September 12th began emerging yesterday (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060831122800.shtml). According to multiple reports, Apple will be hosting the event in San Francisco which will be also streamed live to London.
MacOSXRumors now claims (http://www.macosxrumors.com/articles/2006/09/01/23-inch-imac-coming-on-september-the-12th/) that Apple will be revamping the iMac line with the new Core 2 Duo (Merom) processor at this event, with the additional introduction of a 23" iMac.
Larger iMac form-factor rumors were amongst the reject rumors (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060805230811.shtml) for pre-WWDC rumors. MacOSXRumors, however, cites "reliable sources" for this report and did have some accurate predictions (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060805162310.shtml) for Leopard (virtual desktops, tabbed iChat).

You don't have to be a fanboi to laugh at this one. WP7 may be a completely reworked experience - but it doesn't matter at this point. No one wants a Windows phone anymore.
I predict by 2015 the industry pundits will be asking when Microsoft is going to pull the plug on their Windows Phone unit.

The big deal is that i do not want buggy, resource stealing software on my mac. Simple as that.
Do you run itunes or quicktime? Or possibly a web browser?

At an event in New York on Tuesday, Nokia announced the new Nokia N75, a flip phone that syncs with Windows Media Player, plays MPEG-4 videos in full screen mode, and connects to Cingular's high-speed network. Targeted straight at the North American market, it's a shoo-in to be a high end media phone on Cingular for Christmas.

Do any of these suits ever actually get resolved?
yes they do. For good or ill, more conflicts are being mediated out of court. This saves taxpayer money:), but also prevents case law from being made, leaving judges without precedent to refer to in other cases:(

Well, just to add to the Core2duo speculation, I got an e-ad from Dell this morning advertizing the Inspiron E1705 with the Core2Duo shipping Sept 15.

Indeed. You couldn't dumb down that statement if you tried. It's already reached bottom.
Go hang at dailykos.com. Macrumors appears to be above your pay-grade.

What is this....
www.apple.com/movies
comes up with
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /movies on this server.
What might this mean
movies.apple.com is where they keep the movies that stream on the site (like the get a mac ads)
you normally can't browse to them, but if you look at the page info using Firefox, you can see on a page where the media is located. That's how you can download those movies withouth getting quicktime pro

What do people prefer? I've heard quite bad things about the Magic Mouse, the majority of people saying they find it uncomfortable etc?
As I already have a good Logitech wireless mouse, would it be a better combination to use that plus the Trackpad?
I'm personally a big fan of the mighty mouse. I have smaller hands, and also use bettertouchtool. I find certain maneuvers difficult with it still (like 3 finger swipes), but obviously I opt'd in for that ;)
They're both very nice pieces of hardware, with separate purposes. I'll be honest and say that if I had the choice between the two, I'd buy the trackpad:
a. Gestures on Lion feel better with it imho.
b. I use the keyboard for almost everything, and moving over to a mouse which I'll need to move farther away from my keyboard is irritating. The trackpad stays in one spot.
c. You already have a nice mouse ;)

And heroics by gun toting civilians is mostly a product of fantasy as well. The idea of whipping your gun out to save the day is absurd.
Happens about 2,000,000 times a year. Check the FBI stats if you don't believe me. You don't hear much about that because (A) our media doesn't like to report "good" shootings, and (B) about 97% of the time no shooting is required, as the criminal gets the idea quick and stops threatening innocents in a hurry.
